How Filipinos give gifts
A few cultural notes on Filipino gift-giving:
Pagbibigay ng regalo is an act of care, not transaction. The value of the gesture matters as much as the monetary value. A home-cooked meal brought as pasalubong can mean more than an expensive item given without thought.
Wrapping matters. Gifts are typically wrapped and not opened immediately in front of the giver — this avoids any awkward reactions if the gift doesn't match expectations.
Cash is acceptable and appreciated. Especially for milestone occasions like graduation or weddings, cash (or a GCash transfer) is a practical and welcomed gift. Many families explicitly prefer it over items.
Food is always safe. A well-curated pasalubong box, a food basket, or a restaurant treat almost never misses. Filipino families center celebrations around food — adding good food to any occasion is almost always the right move.
